Review on πŸ’‘ SL928378 Newport Outdoor Ceiling Light by Thomas Lighting - Brushed Nickel Finish by Stephanie Hersch

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great looks and solid but with design flaws that make installation more difficult than it should be.

According to most others this lamp is very well built and looks very good. Although the picture gives the impression that the glass is cracked grass (actually it is not). This is frosted glass. The glass is quite heavy, making it difficult to (awkwardly) remove and swap out the bulbs. You will need to hold the glass firmly to the frame to allow the 4 screws to be inserted. But it can be done. However, there is a major flaw in the way the lamp is wired. The wires should be routed through the center of the fiberglass mat so they don't rub against the top plate (assuming you're using one) or any other plate that may already be in place. But they come with wires protruding through separate holes on the outside edges of the fiberglass mat. I don't know how UL would have approved this design, but I understand why the manufacturer did it. To try and prevent the fiberglass mat from twisting during installation. But it is anyway, and it's not a very big decision. The fiberglass mat is quite thick, which others have pointed out greatly (and unnecessarily) complicates the installation process. Because you have to align the holes in this thick (movable) mat. Push it so that the long screws push the mat (towards the bottom plate). And this carpet really wants to twist and move. Since the mat is already highly compressed (compared to when it started), it is foolish for a manufacturer to use uncompressed fiberglass. I think it was cheaper. But this makes the installation much more difficult than it should otherwise be. But knowing the existing configuration is not secure, I modified the design to route the wires in the center of the mat through the extra hole I made. This worked much better and ensured the wires ended up where they should have, in the middle where the light fixture was attached to the ceiling panel. As said, this light is very attractive and worth all the effort to install. At least for me. But inherent design flaws cause me to give it 1 star.
