Thanks to the reviewers who suggested using a blow dryer to slightly heat the wax to make it pliable. After cutting off the piece, reheat and don't overdo it or the wax will tear off too easily. Don't be put off by the somewhat dull colors of the wax slabs either; If you roll even 1.5 inch pieces (as instructed in the instructions for making 45 candles), the resulting candle colors look quite deep. As advertised, these candles burned for quite a long time.
