I was concerned about our tires and really had no idea how to tell if the tread was good and/or when they should be replaced. I saw this little gadget and decided to buy it. This made measuring tread depth very easy and accurate. I got the measurements and then googled what the profile should be. The tires turn out to be fine and still alive, but now I can check and replace them from time to time before they go bad. Keeping your tires in good condition can save your life, so this little device is worth the price, which wasn't great. From what I've been able to find out, new tires typically have 7mm (10/32") tread. and 9.5mm (12/32") depending on tire type. The minimum legal tread depth in the US is 1.6mm ( 2/32"", but it is recommended (and safer) to change it to at least 2mm (4/32"). Changing winter tires is recommended at 4mm (15/64").
