Incredible amount of features in a small package

Having been in the IT industry for several decades, I can say that I have never seen such features in such a small, inexpensive router. I've only had it for about a week and I'm still using all the features available. I have to say it's more flexible than some "mainstream" brands (which can only be teal) that cost five times as much. I find RouterOS very flexible and easy to learn, the user interface doesn't seem too intuitive at first. But I adapted pretty quickly. I would really prefer to use their CLI but it will take some time to get used to. I bought it to replace an old dying WRT-54G and there is NO comparison. It knocks him out of the water! The only downside (which is minor to me) is the lack of a 5GHz wireless band. I use it in my home lab so it's not a problem for me. You can perform port knocking, configure port spans (port mirroring), create VLANs, route BGP, configure advanced routing schemes, run a layer 7 firewall and sooo many other functions that expensive professional routers/switches can do . I strongly recommend that if you are thinking of buying now, just do it! There is a quick setup screen for those who don't need advanced features. It literally took me less than five minutes to get the initial setup up and running. The quick setup screen is self-explanatory for anyone who has set up a home router before. There are also some good tutorial videos on YouTube for those who need it. (Fair warning: the company's wiki is all about command-line examples and tutorials, so unless you're a command-line warrior, YouTube is your best bet.)

Pros
  • Rugged design
Cons
  • Can cause injury
