I had to purchase a ball joint after one of the pairs originally purchased was destroyed during installation when the trunk lid broke. So the lesson learned is to remove the cover before inserting the new ball joint. Also, instead of using a wire spring, I used a clip from an old joint to hold the top of the boot in place. The wire spring clip does not hold the shoe very securely, unlike the C-clip.
