Over the past year the printer has indicated an empty cartridge several times when I actually had half a tank left. Canon support informed me that there was still excess ink in the cartridge so it would not absorb air or create lines in my photos. I don't quite understand why it takes half a tank, especially when the ink is so expensive. However, I was told something of a hack. If your printer does this, do not replace the cartridge if there is ink left. You can reset the cartridge counter by pressing and holding the blinking amber center button for five seconds. Canon says you run the risk of getting lines in your photos, but I'd rather have the ink I'm paying for.
