For travel this might be fine. I have a DVX200 as a backup - a monstrous 6.6 pound camcorder and this unit is for travel, every extra gram is a liability. So it's a big win that the MVH400 is so light and yet able to handle the load. The head isn't as silky smooth as a $600 head, but it's smooth enough. What others say it can't support the specified load, well if the load is off center you probably have problems. For a DSLR with a large, heavy lens, make sure you attach the head to the lens ring and not the camera body to allow for proper balance. Fixed lens camcorders usually have mount protection near the center of mass, so you should be fine. If in doubt see attached image.
