Review on Ulalov Gooseneck Kettle - Precise Temperature Control For Perfect Pour-Over Coffee And Tea In Seconds by Jeff Zamora

Failed after 6-months of daily use, no longer shuts off at a boil and leaks from the bottom.

I really liked this kettle. A lot. I make coffee at home and use this kettle for making various types and methods of coffee. The kettle was used several times a day but never abused or over/under filled. About a week ago I noticed the kettle would no longer automatically shut off when the water reached a boil. While this is not the most convenient thing to happen, it is not a huge deal since I am always in the kitchen when the water is coming to a boil. I checked the kettle for obvious damage and any scale build-up but did not find anything that would cause the thermal switch to fail in the ON state. I cleaned the inside of the kettle with a soft bristled dish brush and used a drop or two of Dawn detergent followed by a thorough rinse. Afterwards, I filled the kettle to just below the maximum FILL line and tried it again. Same thing, no automatic shutoff when the water reached a rolling boil. I figured I would keep using it anyway because I like the spout and how well it delivers water for pour overs and with my French press. After a few more days using the kettle without the automatic shutoff, it started to leak from the bottom of the kettle. That is a bigger issue since the leaked water collects on the stand/plate that delivers AC mains voltages to the heating element. I no longer use the kettle but wish I could. I have owned many kettle and always have a glass 1-liter kettle around for general purpose use like warming espresso glasses or preheating my thermos but it is not good for pour overs or French press use. That is where a good insulated kettle with a spout comes into play. It really does make making some coffee methods much easier. As good as this kettle was at first, it seems dangerous for a kettle to leak onto the main connection input and fails to shut off when the water boils. For these reasons alone I cannot recommend this kettle. Sadly, this was (initially) my favorite insulated kettle with a bottom spout and stainless steel tank for under $100. I will have to keep trying more kettles until I find the one that doesn't overlook rock-solid safety and reliability or performance to price.

Pros
  • Does not require any additional equipment
Cons
  • Might not be leak-proof during pouring
