The tip on them has no notch (cutout) up to the screw making them self tapping. You can see this in the photos but I didn't care until I tried them. In comparison, other similar screws (e.g. Construction Screws or Spax brands) are knurled and that makes the difference. I just used them to fix a fence and they are poorly constructed and have caused a lot of problems. . Most of the fence posts they just twisted around, didn't cling to. I had to work hard to get them to hook and since they are 6 inches long I had a hard time maintaining good control of the angle while using strength and momentum to get them to work. I will avoid all those Hillman screws in the future. . You get what you pay for.
