Review on LG 32UL950 W Ultrafine 4K Thunderbolt Monitor 🖥️ with Color Calibration, VESA DisplayHDR™ 600, RADEON FreeSync™, ‎32UL950-W by Mark Huling

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It works great with Xbox One X and Series X.

UPDATE FOR LG 32UL950-W with Xbox Series X - 11/14/2020: This monitor still looks great and I've tweaked it to look amazing on the new Xbox Series X. For some comments, I only use this monitor for Xbox gaming. I don't use it with my computers so I can't be held responsible for it. I've attached some photos of the Series X settings and wanted to list my monitor settings for others to try for themselves. The following monitor settings I got on an XBox Series X were achieved by going through "TV Calibration" and "HDR Calibration for Gaming" in the "TV & Display General" settings. I checked the color by playing the video "COSTA RICA IN 4K 60fps HDR (ULTRA HD)" on YouTube (5 minutes 14 seconds). Colors were vibrant and details were crisp. The games look great too. Input List: HDMI Aspect Ratio: Full WidePicture Mode: CustomPicture Adjust Brightness: 80 Contrast: 84 Sharpity: 40 Super Resolution+: High Black Level: Low DFC: OffGame Adjust Response Time: Faster Freesync: Extended Black Stabilizer: 65Color Gamma Adjust: Mode 1 Color Temperature: 7500K No change for six colors. General Smart Power Saving: Low Auto Standby: Off Local Dimming: Automatic. enough for me to be a problem. On some loading screens where it's almost entirely black except for one area (e.g. in Apex Legends where there's a small red flag icon in the lower-right corner), you can see the backlight illuminating a specific column on the screen screen highlights. I never noticed the backlight sections when gaming. This only happened on those initial loading screens. UPDATE - January 30, 2019: I continue to use this monitor and it works great. I've added some screenshots of the Anthem demo login screen. The anthem looks great! I will try to take additional photos from the open demo. In these images I have tried to emphasize the 4K aspect and how the images are more detailed. I was comparing this to my wife's XBox One S on her 40" Samsung TV (UN40H6203AF). You can see the extra 4K detail on the mural (much more detail) and on the helmets (no jagged lines). I have outlined the fresco and the helmet area in red. I also find that the color looks better on the 32UL950-W. As before, I've added a red box that says UN40H6203AF and the spaces are 32UL950-W. ORIGINAL POST - January 18th, 2019: I recently upgraded a Samsung SD27D590 to a LG 32UL950-W for my Xbox One X. I used this monitor for about 10 hours adjusting various settings. I tested with Battlefield V (4K, HDR), Destiny 2 (4K, HDR) and Overwatch (4K, no HDR). So far it's looking very good. One weird thing caught my eye first, but that was unique to Battlefield V. At times it seemed to automatically adjust to a darker tone and then lighten back up. It hasn't happened in other games, nor on my old monitor (and it's a different dimming and brightening than walking out/entering a dark building). The deployment overview card provides more details. Destiny 2 looks amazing! The colors are really strong. I also found the purple color of my Zenyatta skin to be more vibrant in Overwatch, although Overwatch doesn't support HDR. Can't wait to see what Anthem and Division 2 look like! In order for everything to look good, the XBox and the monitor need to be adjusted a bit. I would recommend searching for "best xbox one visuals". You should find a link to check and adjust your Xbox graphics settings for 4K, 10-bit color, PC sRGB, etc. I would suggest running the Xbox TV Calibration Settings as well. I had to reset the display properties on the monitor and calibrate it several times before getting what I wanted. Also, Freesync is not enabled by default. You must enable it in your monitor settings, otherwise Xbox will not recognize that Freesync is available (Settings->Display->Game Setup->Freesync). I chose Extended, which according to the manual has more range. I haven't done any serious freesync testing yet. One thing worth noting about HDR and non-HDR. If you adjust the monitor settings, this one is not configured for HDR. I discovered this while playing Battlefield V. Once the game has launched, a small bubble will appear in the top right corner indicating that HDR content is being detected. As I went to adjust the settings, I noticed that the monitor settings were different than what I had just spent time with. I'm still tweaking the HDR settings and they seem to be saved separately from the non-HDR settings. I also noticed that lowering the HDR brightness level to 90 solved the weird dimming/brightening issue I mentioned earlier. I currently have a brightness of around 75. I've had mixed results with some HDR settings in individual games. I tried using the Destiny 2 settings they recommended for HDR and it looked very washed out. I am attaching some images showing the settings detected on 27" and 32" screens. You will see LG 32UL950 recognized 4K, HDR and Freesync on Xbox. I also uploaded some photos from the mentioned games. I hope the attached pictures aren't too bad. I'm not sure how to change them at boot. All attached images for 27 inch monitors are marked with SD27D590 in a red box. Untagged images of LG 32UL950-W.
