We use two of those inexpensive ethernet to optic converters for lightning protection. We are a radio station with a 1,200 foot tower that is often struck by lightning. Previously, we had several modems, two computers, and three routers and switches that failed due to a lightning strike on our wired network. These boxes, connected by a 6 foot optical cable, sit between our modem and router. The system works fine, performance is not affected. Now only the modem and one of those converters are at risk, and we have backups.
