King has a long tradition of manufacturing high quality waterstones. They are rarely considered "the best money can buy", but there is no doubt that they have always been of great use and many very good stones have been made from them. When it comes to the rough Wasserstein line, King really excels, as does their King 300. Among the best in my opinion. This 300 grit King Deluxe stone goes really well with many stones that are generally considered to be of higher quality. For example I have Cerax 320, Sigma Power 400, Chosera 400 and this King 300. I think King is as good if not better than these other stones for many reasons. A stone with good feedback, but it is very soft and requires constant leveling and attention. Sigma Power is a harder rock, not easily concave, but feedback isn't great for flattening the spine of a planer knife, for example, in which case it charges quickly. I use the Sigma Power 400 for setting bevels on chisels, planes and knives rather than leveling the back of the blade. Chosera 400 is a good stone too, but I prefer Chosera 800 and 3000 over their 400 - I find all three stones mentioned here (King, Sigma and Cerax) to be better than rough. King 300 - the first that does not wear out and does not wear out quickly. Hard very hard. But it's also a fast cutter with good feedback for coarse rock. It really feels like you're shooting at metal, and it doesn't load as quickly as the SP 400. It's also not as soft as the Cerax 320, so there's less mess. It is great for leveling the plane and back of the bit, as well as setting the bevel. This stone really makes everything good. As for prep/soaking before use, the King 300 can benefit from a quick soak. Many Splash and Gos require a quick soak, which is common. The only thing to be particularly careful of when working with King 300 is that it is difficult to flatten as it is dense and hard. More than many other comparable stones. Cerax 320 levels easily, SP 400 is a bit stiffer but not too bad. King 300 - Many like to use loose sand for leveling, others swear by sandpaper on a flat surface. I personally tried all methods and got lucky with DMT Dialflat 120 (XXC). But it's not easy and requires a little more work. All in all a great stone, I would recommend this stone to anyone in the rough stone market without a problem, especially if you are looking for something that can flatten the back of the blade rather than a quick bowl search.
