For the last 6 months I have been using the Radioshack plastic desoldering tool with heavy use ie 10000 connections. It worked pretty well when I first got it but over time it lost suction and finally one day I pushed the release and the plunger flew through the air and landed halfway across the room. One of the stupid plastic clips inside broke and was completely useless. Plastic costs almost as much as solid aluminum. My thoughts so far: unsoldered a few connections and the suction power is amazing. much better than plastic. It feels solid and it looks like the tips are the same as you would find in a radio shop (easy swap out if you have a local shop). worth the extra money for those who frequently disconnect.
