The pen is a fine purple glass with a spiral tip. This is a great way to write thank you notes or greeting cards; it seems so bizarre. I need to improve my calligraphy again to make it worthwhile. The pen comes with a bottle of red ink, which is fine. It's not my favorite ink, but it works and is a good starting point. I like that there is a pen insertion tab at the top of the ink that you can flip upside down to "fill" the pen tip. This means that otherwise the ink is unlikely to spill, which is very convenient. It also comes with a cute little whale pen holder so you can put your pen down and it WILL NOT roll away from you. This is a very cute gift set. The box is boring but practical, black so you can tie it with a ribbon and give it as a gift.
