These are knitting needles, there is nothing superfluous. The pair I bought were dark in color, one pin was bent and the other had a hook on the end. However, the curvature of a needle did not prevent it from being an effective knitting needle, and the burr on the tip was easily removed with sandpaper. The product arrived quickly, well packaged, no need to return. I wasn't too impressed or disappointed enough to send them back. It was easier to order them online than to look for them at local arts and crafts stores, but if there was a yarn store nearby I'd probably just buy them there for about the same price.
