Quality filters in oil filters and accessories

I have never used a K&N filter but as it was reasonably priced I decided to give it a try. It looks like a quality filter, and the fact that the screw at the end is covered in plastic (to keep dirt out before installation I suppose) shows the company goes the extra mile, which few seem to do these days. I'm curious how it works.
