I have been installing and using Kidde gas and carbon monoxide detectors like a pro for over 15 years. Checking the lower readings, I noticed that many reviewers were trying to use the detector for instant measurements by moving the device from place to place, which is clearly labeled as not a feature of the device in the manual. This function requires a concentrated acquisition gas analyzer. I've noticed that others have complained about the device not detecting natural gas and set the devices to low. As the instructions explain, NG is lighter than air and packs higher. Still others complained that the device didn't recognize liquid propane (LPV) and installed the device up. LPV is heavier than air and collects at the bottom. Because of this, gas suppliers have to add mercaptan (rotten egg smell) to their products as an odor. Another problem with any detection device is that the efficiency of the device is directly proportional to the room area and gas concentration. The larger the room and the higher the ceiling, the greater the effect of concentration. Ceiling fans, vents, and temperature also affect concentration readings. This also applies to smoke detectors. The placement of any safety device is critical, and a full understanding of its intended purpose is paramount to safety. The placement of the jack when changing tires, the proximity to traffic when changing tires and the relevant safety regulations must be observed. These devices are extremely effective once you understand their features and limitations. Also remember that all things are temporary and will eventually need to be replaced. You can put a battery in a car with no tires and it won't go anywhere! I encourage everyone to read the instructions and manually test the devices regularly.
