2011 4runner Back Cover Removal Tips for Deep Key Cleaning

The new keypad is ideal for replacing a non-standard OEM control panel. My panel was actually melting and dripping, so I decided to give the button layout a thorough cleaning. You should probably be handy with your hands and have the right tools and cleaning supplies. Here are the basic steps I took to prepare a 95% clean button for a new weatherseal. Get a hard plastic tool to pry off the rear inner door panel.2. Start in the middle of the bottom of the door and work left and right, one at a time pulling the plastic latches away from the doors. After all latches have been removed, simply remove the cover from the door. I let one of the latches slide off the lid, but I used a plastic tool to pry it out of the notch and then put it back into the lid.3. Using a small 10mm ratchet, unscrew the 3 power door bracket bolts, remove the appropriate harness connectors from the black box and then simply leave them hanging on the last harness connection, it will not interfere with removal of the clear sealed plastic. The black sealant bottle is dirty so be careful and I recommend adding a new bottle when replacing the plastic during reassembly.4. To remove the Toyota badge holding the number plate light and door opener button, use a 10mm ratchet to loosen the 4 nuts in the door pocket, one of which is difficult to reach. After removing, cover the door with a blanket to prevent the door from latching but allow operation with the door closed. There are 3 plastic latches that need to be pulled out. Be sure to disconnect the 2 wiring harnesses and push out the seals from the inside. The bottom 2 plastic latches are easy but the one under the Toyota badge is a bit stiff so just give that a quick tug. 6. Now that the Toyota switch bracket is removed from the car, move it to the work table. I recommend using disposable gloves. Remove the 2 screws holding the switch and disconnect the switch harness. Remove the switch from the bracket. Remove the black plastic switch holder from the main assembly for cleaning.7. Disassemble the switch assembly and clean it with various solvents, but don't use anything that will damage the plastic. I've looked through many store-bought paper towels and gloves. I used screwdrivers to scrape the liquid rubber off the switch and then used strong cleaning pads. I also removed the green microswitch using a #3 mini screwdriver to pry the tabs open as needed. After the micro switch was removed I was able to soak the 3 plastic pieces of the switch in the Goo Gone. After all the parts were clean, I cleaned them again with 91% isopropyl alcohol.8. I only went so far as to show a clean switch assembly ready for a new rubber seal because many other buyers have shared photos of the old mess and the newly installed seal. I wanted a very clean switch.
