Review on Netgear Nighthawk Whole System 3 Pack by Jhon Clark

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A product with great potential but can be annoying for the typical end user

I have been using this product for over six months with occasionally mixed results. I've seen it work exceptionally well and fail completely. The use of this product may depend on the complexity of your network or what you intend to do with it. As a standalone, it probably works pretty well for its intended purpose. Out of the box, installation is pretty easy. If you have a smartphone, even the most tech-savvy person will tell you how it works. Experienced or advanced users like me tend to find the setup very basic or easy. One thing that should invariably be emphasized and worth noting during setup is that each satellite will work wirelessly regardless of the router, but will perform exceptionally better when hardwired to an Ethernet backhaul. When I originally bought this device, the disconnect issues were pretty intense pretty much all the time. The satellites are not in sync. I seriously considered returning the product and having three independent routers do the same thing. I read somewhere that there will be a firmware update that will fix these issues. A firmware patch was released in about thirty days, fixing the vast majority of the problems. There were several updates within six months, not as extensive as the first. In experimenting, I found that I could max out 80Mbps speeds in the bedroom when connecting to a concert via Wi-Fi, but when I plugged an ethernet cable from the router into the back of the satellite, it went up the speed to 700 Mbit/s. The manual says you can connect a satellite for a wired ethernet backhaul. You can connect as many as you like as long as you use a network switch from the MR60 main router to the MS60 satellites. In my particular facility, I needed lighting in my master bedroom and playroom. Since these two rooms are on the first floor and my main router (RAX120) is on the second floor, we had spotty reception at best. I used the MR60 as a secondary router (disabling DHCP and statically assigning the MR60, MS60 their own IP addresses) and shared the same SSID and password. This is how the internet works smoothly no matter what room I am in or what device I am using. These little devices mostly work fine in this configuration, but from time to time the connection will stop working and require a reboot. Sometimes I can't access the MR60 site via Wi-Fi, but I can via Ethernet. Sometimes it works for months with no problems, and other times there's just one problem at a time. In one of the latest firmware updates, you can use the device as a hotspot, which is the way to go. However, upon further testing, my connection speed drops by 25% when using it this way rather than as a secondary router. I would like the firmware to be constantly improved for more reliability. My rating is as follows: 4 stars for the product as it is not the worst and offers a lot for the package compared to much more expensive setups. 4 stars for the signal, when it works it works really well, when it doesn't work it's not good at all, an improved firmware could make it even better. 3 stars for tech support because I don't use tech support, most people don't speak well and don't listen to the user's problems, partly because they just don't know the product they represent, 3 stars for the mobile app it is good and looks attractive but I only use the GUI because I can't access the RAX120 and the MR60 in the app at the same time and I don't use the app. The GUI is the only way to support both routers at the same time.

Pros
  • Nice looking
Cons
  • Useless features
