In the constant struggle to keep aquariums clean and healthy for fish and plants, an easy way to change water and remove dirt from the bottom of plant tanks is a continuous series of experiments. It doesn't really get me any closer to the word "easier". Unfortunately, it's too big and bulky, and its size doesn't offer more power or cleanability. This device has many details. It requires significant assembly to get up and running and while it's not a big deal, it's a noticeable difference from the Python system or any other electric gravel cleaner I've used. The drain hose is particularly problematic in this regard - it's long, which is great, but it's a ribbed hose made of a material that likes to hold its shape. So if you're packed into a U-shaped box, you'll have to fight it to stay in the bucket. In theory, it's fine to put a suction cup on the end of the hose, but suction cups don't always attach securely to plastic buckets like mine, so you end up with water all over the place. The motor must remain sufficiently submerged in water. Order of operation, which makes sense in principle, but severely limits the use of the device. I've tried using it with the 10 gallon and it works like a vacuum but none of the glass cleaning elements work because it's so high when you pull it up the glass that you lose suction. It worked fine on my 55 gallons but still couldn't get all the way to the top. As a vacuum cleaner, it has an average performance. To be honest I was expecting it to be stronger than it is given the size of the case. I have an older Eheim vacuum with a much smaller impeller that works about the same. The instruction manual is average. The text is quite small, but not as small as some stuff I've gotten lately, so it's readable and the pictures are pretty good and useful. It's a bit skimpy - not all parts in the box are described or even listed in what came in my box, so you need to have some experience with this type of device to know what you're doing. If this was my only experience with gravel vacuums it wouldn't be a bad thing and would discourage me from using the device and I could use it now and then to solve the right problems in my large aquarium. If I only had 10 gallons I would box it up and put it in a closet, it's just not worth assembling and I have no options other than my plain little python hose.
