I've wanted to get one of these for years because they look really versatile. But it turned out that this is not all. A tripod is very useful in a situation where you have a strange object to grasp. But in my experience, that only happens a small fraction of the time. On a flat surface such as a tabletop, it will not hold even a lightweight digital camera in "portrait" mode because (1) it will tip over and (2) the gimbal will not reach the required final position. Another problem is the connection with the camera mount. The tripod has a small tab that screws into the camera mount and then slides into the tripod. It hurts, requires a screwdriver, and needs to be removed before you can use another mount. A much better tripod for most of my shoots is the Pedco Ultrapod. The camera is easier to turn on and off and holds a heavier digital camera in almost any orientation. Not only does it work much better on a flat surface, but it also attaches to many other items like poles or chairs with Velcro. The Gorillapod has room in your bag for certain situations when you have an odd object to grasp, but I wouldn't leave it as my only (small) tripod.
