My birds use this a lot. The room isn't too far apart so they can't reach it. The bars are a bit larger than my cage so are good for a light leg warm-up. My food bowls can stand on it and birds can still walk around. It works inside or outside the cell. The only complaint is that the hooks that hold it in place don't fold back for protection. Too much weight can cause the shelf to slide down. If you have a heavy pet or put a heavier toy on it, the shelf may not be able to support it. But I had a stainless steel bowl filled with chopped veggies and four budgies at a time and it wouldn't budge. I think when the weight ends it goes down.
