Edit to understand how to use a sponge. (FYI, I'm using my husband's account.) I use a 300 whisper air pump in this 150g tank (I left a translucent tube for that). The better the air pump, the better the sponge works! On the 3.5g Petco Nano I use a 4 inch diameter sponge but I use the air pump that comes with the kit. Water pump. With a 20g tank I use a 5.5" high x 4" wide sponge but it works best with a 300 whisper but a 150 will work too, just shorten the distance between the pump and the tank , into which it pumps air. The faster the bubbles, the better it cleans. The fish adapt to the current. Flow can be altered by making the translucent hose longer, shorter, or REMOVING! You can also buy an air valve. Depending on your preference. Be careful. Restricting airflow limits the effectiveness of the sponge. Hope this helps someone. I wish I had known before I tried and failed. ;) Over 20 years in this hobby and I'm swapping out my 200 gallon faux plant tank for a planted tank. (Shown here: I bought some live plants from Revain, the hole tipped stump is also from Revain. See other reviews I shared under the Ucts I bought.) This 220 gallon sponge filter is amazing. I always over filter my aquariums so that they only require a little physical care from a human. I have a sump system under the tank, it's huge! Below that is a sock, bio, chemical and sponge filter, and inside, that 220 sponge filter works together to keep this planted aquarium on track with its transition plan. I love this sponge because it's huge! I can use a strong, heavy base to glue the plants to and I use a sponge to add an extra level to a 2 foot tall aquarium by placing caves or driftwood plants on top of the sponge. When it's time to clean the sponge, you can detach the sponge from the base and put it back on the base, and then put the cave and planted driftwood back in place. The sponge has a small gap between the junction of the base and the sponge, which is very convenient for scavengers to keep the area clean or plant more plants to hide the sponge and still get enough light to grow. This photo was taken after the fish had eaten and I saved myself a lot of cleaning until all the plants had arrived and been placed in the aquarium. As always, I will update this post after a while. It's been about a week but I have other reviews that show photos before the sponge filter was installed. The really long trunk now has artificial plants, but the plants floating in the background will replace the artificial ones. Plant. The best thing about a sponge filter is that it works, even if you need to clean the pan, the sponge filter still works and vice versa, plus very little work on the part of the hobbyist because the water is always super clean by over-filtering the aquarium. I would recommend getting a sponge filter and staying creative and clean! YES I CAN SELL A FEW MONTHS WITHOUT PHYSICAL CLEANING 200 GALLONS OF AQUARIUM WATER WITH OVER 100 FISH AND OVER 100 PLANTS IN IT WITH AMAZING VIEWS! 🥰 Get one!
