The jack should lift less than half the car weight as the other 3 wheels are still carrying most of the load - depending on which part of the car it is is you lift. My car weighs 4100 pounds and its weight is fairly evenly distributed - 53% in the back and 47% in the front. So for safety reasons I bought this jack which claims to be able to hold over 70% of my car's weight - more than enough for any situation. We are talking about lifting less than 50% of the vehicle weight. For the sake of argument, let's say the jack should lift half the weight of the car (2050 pounds), which is an overstatement. With the tire still touching the ground, the jack squeaked, then the ball bearing exploded. I was lucky that I wasn't injured. So if you need to push this jack at least 50% of the declared power I would look for something else.
