Well, what else can you get from this cheap optic these days. Good binoculars usually start around $200, and zoom optics are always a compromise. Check out a pair of Fujinons or Steiners and you'll be shocked at how good they are (which is what I have on my boat), but not everyone is willing to spend that much. The good news is that over the years a lot of optical technology has seeped down and become cheaper. This monocular is a great example because $40 is pretty cheap, but it does a pretty good job. OPTICS: Get reasonable sharpness at minimum magnification. If you haven't tried high quality stuff, this is pretty amazing. There is no ghosting and the colors look very good. Zooming softens the image a bit, but it's still acceptable. The extra zoom comes in handy when you need it. If you are planning to use them on a boat, using the higher magnification will be more difficult as you cannot always remain stable. HANDLING: The monocular is actually quite large, much like the other half of a full-size pair of binoculars. . A tripod mount is good, but NOT having a strap mount is a SERIOUS drawback. The bag has a strap but it's not that good. Focus and zoom work smoothly, and the device feels pretty solid and doesn't drop easily. VALUE: This is a very good value monocular. But it works at a high enough level to please many users. It will not replace any of my premium binoculars. They offer sharper optical quality and higher contrast, which is what we expected. But for the money it's pretty solid and I doubt most people will be unhappy with the performance. The worst thing is that there is no strap, but you can always buy a tripod strap and that will solve the problem. I bought it so I don't have to hand out my expensive binoculars to guests while I'm sailing here in California. ;-)
