Very interesting! We've just moved into a new house and I've noticed that the water tastes funny and looks oily/soapy. Ordered this to assess the situation. Surprise! Water straight from the faucet has been tested for more than 500 ppm - the EPA's "maximum contamination level". As a control, I also tested bottled spring water, which showed 190-200, which is the high end of what you would expect from mountain spring water according to the attached chart. This gauge is extremely easy to use - just remove the cap and dip the end. It takes a few seconds to stabilize, but the display has an easy-to-read backlight (green is good, red is bad). I've noticed that I was rarely presented with the same number twice - if I deleted and pasted it again or dug deeper, I tended to get a slightly different number (+/- 10ppm). But overall it seems accurate. Thanks to this little device, we will definitely stick with bottled water until the problem is solved!
