As always, this is a quality tool from Mitutoyo and the aesthetics are excellent. Satin finish on the body/thimble of the instrument and a mirrored (presumably lapped) finish on the base. The measuring pin is very tight and rotates perfectly; The movement of the screw is not rough, loose, or overly tight. He measures what he needs and does it well. I don't like the plastic ratchet at the end, it could be a bit sturdier, but it's not critical to the tool's performance, and with so many cheap knockoffs. I can't blame Mitutoyo for limiting themselves to what they can do. The same applies to the plastic latch. It's not that easy to lock as measured and could be better designed (even with plastic locks instead of the old metal locks). When I bought this tool I got stuck between the 2.5" and 4" bases. I'm glad I chose the narrower base as in many cases I need to glue it in small areas and if I need a wider base parallels or blocks can always increase the reach.
