I have two female Bettas and a Pleco in a 15 gallon heated tank with filter. Unlike males, female bettas have to get along with each other. Apparently my purple bantam fish, Dragonfruit, didn't get the note. For the past few months, she has been bullying her aquarium mates, driving them off their food and biting their tails. According to Supernanny, this is "unacceptable behavior". So I bought a dragonfruit-fishy version of the "cheeky step": a time-out aquarium. I carefully drilled a few small holes in the bottom of the box so she wouldn't suffer the added injustice of looking at her own poop in solitary confinement. The time out tank gave my other fish a chance to go two weeks without stealth attacks and they are a bit braver as a result. Now they are together again and live as peacefully as fish. And if the tails become targets again, I like knowing that I can put the dragon fruit back in the tank for a while so it can see other fish but not disturb them.
