Rugged, difficult to install, no PoE (802.3af)

This AP looks/feels like it could survive a nuclear winter. If you live on the beach or in other extreme environments, this hotspot is likely to be a great hotspot for your outdoor needs. I was planning to install this on my patio but a number of factors made it too difficult and I decided to try a different solution. Ultimately, I think if you need an outdoor hotspot, there are cheaper and better options from Ubiquiti. Cons: 1. This device is advertised as "PoE" but is not 802.3af/at compliant. I have multiple PoE/PoE+ switches and none turn on this device. When I use the included PoE injector, the device turns on. This is really annoying considering I have 18 other PoE/+ devices on my network and a huge PoE+ switch to power them. The ability to remotely turn the device on and off using my switch's web interface is very important, and the requirement to use that (very cheap looking) passive PoE injector negates that ability for this product.2. It really is designed to be pole mounted and nothing else. The box comes with a pole mount and that's really the only way to mount the device and while you can use snap screws or whatever, it doesn't look great and takes some effort to install. 3. It's heavy and looks industrial (ugly). If you install it next to the switch box, it will blend in harmoniously, but if you want it on your patio ceiling, it will not impress your wife.4. You will need to know how to manually configure the computer to the required subnet/IP address to get to the setup page as the device comes with a default static IP address. This isn't a problem for me as I have to do this for a lot of the devices (IP cameras) I use, but for the average person it's probably a problem (other "bad IPs" reviews seem to confirm this). DHCP and some sort of discovery client would probably be the best move for the average consumer. 802.11n only. This is fine and probably better if you primarily need long distances, but if you have a 1Gbps fiber ISP or a crowded 2.4GHz environment, leave the speed behind when using this one device on the floor. . Advantages: 1. Solid outdoor signal.2. Built like a tank, it looks like it could offer WiFi on the seabed.

Pros
  • Customize your wireless network as needed, with multiple operating modes
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
