I bought this lens knowing it was fully manual, no auto focus (as a reference to the price). I have read many reviews on this lens and of course as with most products you have read both the good and the bad. I went to YouTube and watched videos about this Opteka, it has many names like "Bauer". It's the same, only the name is different. It weighs around 4.5 pounds so yes you can hold it in your hands but it is difficult to keep it stable so a sturdy tripod is highly recommended! Since it's all manual controls, zoom, and focus, it's going to take some time to set up, but once you get everything right, you're in for some great shots! Some people have written about the pictures getting dark, which is true, but I set the shutter and they come out great! If you have a lighter tripod you will likely shake with panning or any camera movement, I used a remote shutter release or you can use a timer. I soon began taking sharp pictures of flowers across the block in the park. I think it was about 150 feet away and the lens was about 700mm. If you are looking for something with deep reach or are a beginner and don't want or can't spend money, then this is the area for you. Maybe not for everyone, but for me. I really like it, the depth and price suited me. However, it is large and heavy, so a sturdy tripod and some patience are recommended. I took great photos/videos, I have no complaints.
