Good Simple Simple Machine

This welder is a little different than what I expected, but not for the better. I am not a professional welder. I have never used a wire feed welder before buying this welder. I have a lot of experience with electrode welding machines. I bought it to have something more versatile than the Zeny 160 arc welder I bought last year. For the capable hobbyist, a multiprocessor welder makes sense. I did a little looking around and went for this, it seemed to have the best features, best price and other decent reviews. I unpacked and everything was in place except for the wire spool (which shouldn't have been there, my mistake). I put in a roll of E71T-11, went out and ran a few test beads. That's when I realized that things are a little easier than I expected. The amp button is more like a "set it and forget it" button; it controls current, voltage and wire feed speed. A table in the manual explains this. As a newcomer to the wire feeder field, this made the learning curve very short. I was able to get decent welds with good penetration very quickly and didn't have to worry about wire speed and tension. The top knob fine-tunes the tension if needed, but this isn't reflected on the display. After a few test beads, I spent the next 5 hours fixing worn/damaged hardware and building a firebox for my smoker. Having run 100 amps or less, I have never exceeded the machine's duty cycle. There was only one minor case of burns. By the end of the day I had used about 3/4# (.030) wire and completed all my repairs. It works, it works very well. This is a good learning machine. I think it's pretty easy to use. It's quite portable and lightweight. A few colleagues are very interested and are considering a purchase. A few cons: The ground clamp is cheap and I replaced it with an RF clamp. The cables (ground and stinger) are on the short side. The wire feed cable is also short, but didn't cause any problems.

Pros
  • Large enough to handle 2lb coils of wire.
Cons
  • New Competitors Arrive
