This backpack is very useful for carrying books and/or a laptop and fits in the top compartment when traveling by plane. The soft side that fits against the back is about 12 inches. wide and 20" long and has a loop at the top for you to hang it from. Each bottom of the pack has 6" deep and expandable to 6" wide bottle pockets with adjustable diagonal guards. Straps on the outside of the bag on one side near the middle and on the other side at the top. At the bottom of this polyester item is an 8 inch zippered pocket that houses a rain cover to keep the pack dry. There are 4 other zippered pockets for storing items. The one closest to your back is padded on both sides and measures 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 2 inches deep, depending on how bulky the contents are. The next one is about the same size and has a key strap at the end. Above. A convenient 1" x 8" carry handle is located at the top of the backpack between these two zippered pockets. The next zippered pocket opens into another 9" x 9" pocket with 4 vertical slits and an elasticated top. which are 4.5 inches long. The middle two are 1.5 inches wide and the ones on the sides are 4 inches wide. The last zip pocket is 9 inches wide and 13.5 inches long. The kit includes two separate detachable containers. One is designed for a 17 inch laptop. The soft case measures 16.5 x 11.4 x 1.2 inches and has a Velcro flap at the top. It fits comfortably in each of the zippered pockets closest to the back. Another detachable, padded case measuring 1.5 x 6.25 x 9.5 inches looks a bit like a zippered wallet. It has 1" x 1.5" loops sewn just below the zipper on each side to which a carry handle can be attached. Although the case is designed for a 10 inch tablet, my Kindle and its case fit perfectly in this case and fit perfectly in the zipped pocket on the back of the backpack. Padded 2.5" wide shoulder straps are sewn into the top of the bag and have adjustable shoulder straps at the bottom. Each strap has a 2" horizontal loop near the center of the strap that can be used to attach other items.
