Foam pads are not as soft on the side of your vehicle. Put a towel underneath. It didn't work for our canoe because the cushions aren't adjustable so you can attach it directly to the car, upside down so air doesn't get caught in it. We tried to do it like the picture but I had to pull my seat belt really tight to keep it from coming loose and my Ford Fusion kept denting. The belt also runs through the car just above the head. I'm 5-5ft so it might be bulky for those who are taller. They're great for a paddle or surfboard and maybe a small kayak if you put something on the roof, but not a canoe. Belts are of good quality. and the straps are easy to tighten.
