I don't know why everyone is so mad at this kayak rack. It works great. I'm sure the bars on my car would have helped secure the trunk and belts a little better if I didn't have them. but in general everything works. Easy to attach to the car. East to tie a kayak. It's definitely safer to have 2 people tighten the straps rather than just one, but I don't mind. Foam pads are not as soft on the side of your vehicle. Put a towel underneath. It didn't work for our canoe because the cushions aren't adjustable so you can attach it directly to the car, upside down so air doesn't get caught in it. We tried to do it like the picture but I had to pull my seat belt really tight to keep it from coming loose and my Ford Fusion kept denting. The belt also runs through the car just above the head.
