Review on MHDMAG Double Sided Fishing Magnet, Powerful Magnet Fishing With 480Lbs Combined Strength Neodymium Rare Earth Magnet Fishing For River Lake Fishing Retrieving Salvage (1.89In Dia) by Mat Thompson

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Nice design but grossly over-rated

Ordered and received LNM48-2 which advertises 200 pounds of pull per side. Two sides of the magnet are exposed but one side has an eye bolt in it so it might pick something up on the bolt side but will not hold as well as the other side. The marketers for this brand are out of control. Start with the "400lbs combined magnet force" specification: pure marketing crap since the magnet cannot pick up a 400 pound object. Just because you have a supposedly 200-pound-rated magnet exposed on two sides does not mean you should use the 400-pound number in advertising. To be fair, they mention it is 200 pounds force per side, and I understood this right away, but I mention this because the false advertising gets worse. This magnet is completely incapable of picking up a 200-pound object, or even 100 pounds. These numbers are under ideal conditions: perfectly flat steel or iron and pure vertical pulling force with no tilt or sliding. But replicating the ideal conditions, I tested this magnet at 50 pounds of pulling force. Stuck to the side of a metal cabinet I can easily pull it off vertically. Stuck to the flat end of a 50-pound solid iron dumbbell weight (no vinyl or other coating), and lifting strictly vertically, this supposedly 200-pound pulling force magnet is barely hanging on to the magnet, and if I barely rock it the magnet lets go of the 50-pound weight. Therefore, if the magnet is pulling an object side ways, expect about 12 to 15 pounds of horizontal holding force (or less if the object's surface is irregular and/or the surface the object is dragged on has a lot of resistance. The good: the eyebolts and washers are stainless and two sets are included so you can configure this magnet a couple different ways. The threads go completely through the exposed (flat sides) magnet which leaves more options.

Pros
  • Pre-Notice
Cons
  • Can be ineffective in murky or muddy waters
