Works great as a shelf and crossbar. I added this to my mom's bathroom and she loves it. She uses it to support herself in the shower (she just broke her hip), and also uses it to hold her shampoo and hold her hand shower. She puts the shower head on a shelf so when she sits down she doesn't have to get up to grab the shower head every time she uses it. I know they make a piece just for this and I also added that she uses a shelf. She says it's easier that way. If you are renovating a bathroom or adding shower supports, check out this shelf. It works great and comes with extremely strong anchors.
