After the purchase my first thought was to test it right away. So I put the stick in a water bottle, shake it vigorously and wait a few minutes. I repeated this several times before tasting the water. I shook the bottle a total of 4 times within 20 minutes and tested the water right away. In my house I use a Berkley water filter and this is the water that came in the water bottle. The pH is around 7 (Berkeley water) according to the test strips I also bought. So 20 minutes later I took a sample of the water with an alkaline stick, shook it vigorously about every 5 minutes and used a test strip to see if it got even more alkaline. But after the test, the color on the test strip was slightly lighter than regular filtered water. I ran this experiment three times and got consistent results; although I used the same lye stick. tl;dr Based on my personal testing and results, this product generally doesn't work.
