I bought this lens on the EOS 5D as a combat landscape lens, to replace the EF 24-70 / 2.8L (the one did not suit me with its weight and lack of a long focus). The lens has already performed well on several trips, now I have moved it to the new EOS 6D. The sharpness of the lens is high, subjectively higher than that of the 24-70 (and is approximately equal to 50/1.4 @ f/8). The stabilizer generally helps, but is not a panacea - the risk of movement still remains. But with a stabilizer, you can shoot waterfalls handheld at a slow shutter speed, which is important when hiking. Aperture 4.0 is not a drawback for a lens of this purpose, because. for the landscape, the presence of a stabilizer is more important than good aperture. The maximum focal length of 105 mm allows you to comfortably shoot in the mountains, as well as, to some extent, all kinds of birds. A well-known problem with this lens is strong geometric distortion and vignetting at 24-35 mm, which is not cured by closing the aperture and is very noticeable in landscapes. Moreover, in my copy, the upper left corner of the frame is the darkest, so auto-correction in ACR does not completely eliminate the problem. If there are people in the frame on the 24 mm FR, then the auto-correction of distortion must be ALWAYS turned off, otherwise the figures and faces will noticeably swell. (And in general, it is better not to allow people to the periphery of the frame at a wide angle.) I didnβt particularly like vignetting, because if on EF 50 / 1.4 and 24-70 / 2.8L it is pleasant and sometimes even improves the picture (brightness gradually decreases from the center to the edge), here it is very sharply defined, as if the matrix does not fit into the image circle . In general, this lens is not ideal and is not suitable for portraits, but of the alternatives to it (standard zoom from 4x, stabilizer), only 28-135 / 3.5-5.6 is sold, which is SIGNIFICANTLY worse. There is also a new Sigma 24-105, but it is also not ideal in terms of the sum of its qualities. Moreover, both of these lenses are not waterproof. Therefore, I am quite satisfied with the purchase within the framework of the tasks set, but for the soul there are 50 / 1.4.
