Review on πŸ¦† Duck 286218 XL Patio Door Shrink Film Window Insulation Kit, 1-Pack, Crystal Clear by Seth Damain

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Decent quality for the price

Firstly I have been fitting plastic panels to my windows for the last 9 years. Even with windows, I didn't think drafts and new windows would surprise you at the amount of cold air that prevents you from flowing through the window panes themselves (rather than air leaks). This saves me at least $90 on heating bills during the coldest months. Before you seal the last bottom corner of your window on a cold day, just put your hand on the spot and feel all the cold air come out! With our 4-season porch almost the entire window, the effect is felt immediately. The ground is warmer and heats up much faster in the daytime sun. Now for the product comparison. Duck is a decent brand. Especially for the price. My father has used them for many years as they are sold at his local hardware store. I prefer the 3M plastic sheet, it's more transparent with less hard creases to inflate compared to other brands, and it feels a bit thicker and doesn't tear as easily (cat's claw tested this). But 3M film is becoming increasingly difficult to find and the price has skyrocketed as a result. I've also tried Frost King a few times, I would stay away from this brand, it has terrible visibility and wrinkles never appear and is more expensive than Duck. So this year I decided to give Duck another try, especially since it's less than half the price of 3M. I was able to get as much of the fold lines as possible with 3M film and the tape seems decent too. It went about as easily as the 3M. So far, so good. I'll keep an eye on it over the winter as some of the tape can come loose if you haven't removed all the dirt, oil or cleaner from the window frame or if the tape is just poor quality. Frost King Tape has terrible hold. The 3M tape is very strong and may rip off the polish if old and sun damaged. This isn't a defect with this tape, it just means you need to save and tape the window frame. Old wood window trim can even shed wood fiber, so keep that in mind if you're installing vinyl in an old home that hasn't been maintained. I will update this review in the spring after I need to remove the Duck film or if I need to reattach the film due to tape failure. So I'm going to use the remaining 3M holdings for the key areas where we spend most of our time looking out the windows. But the rest of the house has been switched to Duck, and I'll probably switch to Duck altogether, unless 3M somehow drops in price and is back in stock at my local hardware store, where I buy in bulk at the end of the season when it does running sale. :) Duck is worth the money. I'm stocking up on this brand in case the price starts to go up.
