I bought these shoes to replace worn out hiking boots on a trip to Utah's Big Five National Parks. I wore them to work for a few days to break in (one day would have been enough). On the trip I took only the MT-3 and a pair of sandals, so the MT-3 should serve both on paved ground and on difficult hikes. It handled both of these tasks impeccably, as did the Topo Athletic's signature fit and ground feel (I increased the size by 0.5 as recommended on the Topo website). Traction on the MT-3 was impeccable throughout the ride, whether climbing Angel's Landing or descending Peek a Boo and Spooky Play Canyons. I was able to navigate confidently when many of my comrades in thicker hiking boots hesitated. Caveats: I've only owned the shoe for a few weeks and haven't had a chance to test it in wet or icy terrain. I mainly do hiking, not trail running, although I've run a few descents in these shoes with no problem. For comparison, I tested the Topo Hydroventure 2 before settling on it. I found the Hydroventure 2 to be a lot hotter than the MT-3, presumably due to the waterproofing. My climate tends to be warm, so this was an important factor for me. It has an even more aggressive outsole that could have been better on the toughest terrain, but I felt it was overkill and degraded the ride too much. I haven't hit any terrain yet where I could ask for more from an MT-3 clutch. I also prefer the fit of my MT-3 to the fit of the Hydroventures I've tried (it's not clear to what extent this is due to a model or manufacture difference).
