Review on 🚘 Lund Soft Pack Roof Bag - 601016, Black by Jimmy Bores

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent quality car roof rack

I bought this rack for a family trip with 4 + 2 small dogs (approx 12 hours each way) in a Chevy Impala for Christmas. This car has a huge trunk and we used to drive it with no problems, but once we added the amount of gifts and cold-weather clothing we needed to take with us, there was no way we could fit anything in the car. I started looking for a roof. Roof racks but most said a roof rack is needed and I didn't want to buy a roof rack as I would probably only need it once. This bag popped up when I was looking for the Revain and the fact that the reviews said no roof rack is needed definitely caught my eye. After reading many reviews and studying my Impala, I wasn't comfortable that the clips that came with the bag would be enough. I took M. Ledford's advice and at the same time bought a pack of 6 foot cable ties with a cam buckle. The bag arrived and the first thing I noticed was the quality - for the price I was surprised and very satisfied. I then fitted it to the car to see how it would attach and I didn't feel the clamps provided would hold at all - I think it all depends on how the roof frame of your particular car is shaped. The Impala's roof slopes inward at about 45 degrees, and the clamps begin to loosen as it is tightened. I ended up making a loop with the straps attached, as if you were clinging to a roof rack. I took one end of the cam buckle, attached it to this belt and threaded it into the car through the inside handle. I did the same on the opposite side and connected them through the locking buckle and tightened. I did this front and back and the bag went nowhere. I tied the loose ends of the belt to a tight belt and it worked fine. There are no problems with dangling and noisy loose straps. Before attaching, I took heed of others' warnings that during heavy rain, moisture can get inside. I invited boots, heavy coats and other miscellaneous things. items in garbage bags. I also put two suitcases in a roof bag, covered them with a waterproof tarp and zipped the bag shut. We hit the road and the first eight hours went well with minimal noise and little rain. After stopping for gas at 8 a.m. without even touching the bag, we drove back along the highway. About a minute later this horrible "vibrating" sound started and wouldn't stop. After about 3 or 4 minutes we couldn't take it anymore so I stopped at the next exit and the straps on the bag loosened a bit. Not to the point where the bag could shift or come loose, but enough that the straps were moving at 75mph and making noise. After a second train we got onto the interstate and the horrible noise was gone. Immediately after the start it started to rain and it poured continuously until we reached our destination. After about two hours of non-stop rain, the seat belts that entered the car on all four doors began to drip inside the car. Nothing fancy but it was definitely annoying and we didn't have towels in the car to help with that. Something we'll be ready for on the way home. Upon arrival I immediately removed my bag from the roof and opened it to see how wet/dry everything was. All items in the bin bags were 100% dry as expected. I removed the tarpaulin and the top of the suitcases were also 100% dry. However, when we removed our cases, the floor was wet from soaking up water that had settled on the bottom of the bag. After some serious glares from my teenage daughters (I didn't put my bag or my wife's bag in it :)), everything in the suitcases was left 100% dry as there is a plastic liner on the bottom of each suitcase. luck there. Overall I am very happy with this roof bag. The quality seems excellent and although it does let some moisture through I can live with that at this price point. I could have paid 5-10x that amount to buy a roof rack and waterproof rack but I felt like I could make this bag work and it exceeded my expectations. It's not quiet at motorway speeds, but nothing a radio cranked up a notch couldn't handle. Just make sure the straps are very taut, the risers are secure (check at EVERY stop), put anything that needs to stay dry in a plastic bag, and enjoy the ride.
