Review on πŸ”§ Astro 13-Inch Heavy Duty Riveter - Model 1423 by Chris Hamim

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works great after modifications.

so I bought this 'good' rivet gun to replace my old crappy broken normal one. you can ride All the pieces slide in very easily which never happens and I'm finally ready to rivet my new powder coated door panels. I clamp the plates in place, drill two dozen 1/8" holes, and pull out my shiny new Astro 1423! I open the jaws, insert the stainless steel rivet into the jaw, and pull the handles down about halfway until I feel them grip the rivet. I push the rivet firmly into the hole and keep squeezing the handles together. It takes about ten pulls to install a 1/8 inch diameter by 1/2 inch long stainless steel rivet. I point the rivet gun up. to the sky and open the jaw and clink the mail enters the container. 3 hours later I've made 16 rivets, some require 100+ pumps to install. Remember that the heat index is 116. At this point I'm looking at the Neighbor's Goat wondering if she's going to help or sacrifice blood. I'm sweaty, tired and my head hurts from these damn pens. I give up and go in to soak up some AC. I decide the tool is hopeless, so I might as well take it apart and see what happens. I quickly found that the tips are of different lengths and this determines the width of the jaw opening. So I take some washers and glue them between the tip and the huge nut it screws into which is supposed to keep the jaws from opening too far. Not only does it grab a 1/8" shank, it grabs instantly, not halfway to the pump. You no longer have to point it to the sky and close the grips to "set" the jaws. I go outside and finish the last 6 rivets in minutes, each rivet setting done in 3 even strokes I wish I had known that 3 hours ago.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Exchange available
