Review on Infrared Thermal Resolution Temperature 20 300°C by Joe Jordan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

HT-04 is good but not close enough focal length and insufficient manual

The only thing I'm deducting a star for is that the minimum focal length is too long for electronic use. The field of view is about the same as a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera, and a wide angle is better for a short focal length. Look at the first image, which is a combination of visual and thermal (displaced by close proximity). The board is 12.7mm (1/2") wide and you can see that the 8-leg component is warm, but the image is very washed out. If a hot component were 0805 next to other components of the same size, it would be it's hard to tell which one is hot, with a thermal imaging camera that has good close-range resolution, you can not only see which part is hot, you can see where it is, the chip is in the part, because only the chip is heating up, for for all other purposes the HT-04 is fine as it has a resolution of 220x160 pixels and a field of view like a 'normal' lens in a camera (see selfie), there is enough detail to see people at a distance probably up to 100m.The third photo is at about 50m and by the way you can see where the car and boat trailer were parked during the day which made the pavement a few degrees cooler.not helpful but I'm attaching 5 pics so that You can see.It is possible different color scales for the thermals, in this case I chose the default color scale as the graphics are mostly grayscale. The options are: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0%. Use the left and right arrows to change the mix ratio. The manual doesn't mention batteries, you have to remove the cover on the handle and insert 4 AA alkaline cells. Nothing happens when you press ON, but that's because you have to hold the button down for about 5 seconds (!) before it turns on. Same with turning off, that's a very long press. Some information is missing in the instructions. For example, it doesn't mention that clicking the shutter button to take a photo opens a dialog box and to save it you can just click again, but to discard it you have to click "Select". This device allows the user to select the emissivity (default e=0.95). To illustrate the meaning, I took two photos of an aluminum block on a hotplate. In the visual image (the glowing iron in the image turned blue for some reason) you can see the reflection of the glow in the Al block. The same reflection is visible in the IR image, while the top of the aluminum block appears cool enough to touch. I poured some water on it and it evaporated in seconds; It burns hot, but aluminum has low emissivity, so it reflects heat instead of absorbing/radiating heat. The cold temperature you see reflects the cold ceiling of the room. As the emissivity decreases from 0.95 (95%), the rest is compensated by reflection, so that at an emissivity well below 95%, an accurate temperature determination is not possible. This isn't a downside to this device, but the claim that you can set it to say 30% and get a useful reading is misleading marketing. On the other hand, this device is ideally suited as a thermal imaging camera. It always stretches the contrast in the considered temperature range. There are many uses for it. You'll be amazed at what you can discover as you roam the area at night.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Unsure
