I used 1/2" for russet potatoes and 1/4" for sweet potatoes. Both worked. The device can be used again. It took enormous force to push through the potatoes. The redheads fired with two feet. Candy hung at the last moment. The plastic handle moved under a lot of pressure, so I used a towel to protect my hands (yes, both hands). Suction held up well, but tended to slack off, with the lever leaning back when not giving some relief from full travel of the suction lever. As far as I know, this is perhaps the best device on the market. I'm surprised it's still intact.
