I had a hard time understanding why my new fancy projector wasn't working in 4K. I had a 5 year old projector that I was upgrading to a new Epson 5050. The HDMI cable might have been a hair's breadth at 50 feet, but it needs to get to the attic and then back to the projector, so I "cheated" at first and decided the longer the better. When I turned on the 5050 I got the main picture and then went to check the signal quality. To my dismay he said he had enough quality for 1080 but when I tried to test 4K he couldn't see the image. Serious crap. When I tested the shorter cable it worked great so I knew I had a spacing issue. I bought it with little expectation to see if I could get lucky. I was concerned that I couldn't think of an improvement since there was no additional power supply. In any case, I wouldn't have to refuel anything halfway through, and it seemed like the only chance, albeit a long one. Of course, when I hooked up 2 cables of 25ft (50ft total), again I got no signal and started cursing my unreasonable optimism. "Fine print" will be. Then I put on my glasses and, to my embarrassment, it wasn't fine print, more like a handbook for a rampant idiot. In fact, one port was labeled as input and the other as output, although I was still a bit skeptical. I switched pairs still trying to keep my expectations under control. And that's how I got the picture. I quickly launched Netflix, found the first 4K movie I could find, and sure enough, the picture looked like I was looking through a window at a barrier reef. I fired up the XBOX and asked him to check the quality and not only did he say 4K was good, he said I was good for something called HDR10 - whatever that was. In the end I am overwhelmed by the result and very happy with it. Device. I have yet to run new wiring through the attic but this little machine saved me a huge disappointment. Not sure how it works without a separate power supply, but ultimately I don't need it. It's also a reminder to have a little faith and always wear glasses. . . .
