Review on Dow Filmtec TW30 1812 50HR Rejection Replacement: Superior Filter for Enhanced Water Quality by Leslie Whitehorn

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not as good as what I had but works and I saved $100 over what the local tech would charge.

I have a WRI (Water Resources International) ultra micro reverse osmosis system that is over 16 years old. Growing up, I was one of those foodies who fell for the trap of knocking on the merchant's door to show me how bad my water was and how they could make it better. After spending over $3,000 on a Hydro Quad water softening system and an Ultra Micron reverse osmosis system, I have had no more problems with the water heater elements, the stains on the dishes were gone and the systems wonders showed that they work, not to mention the amazing taste. water and clean ice cubes. But for the price I paid I'd rather get top notch results right! We are now over 16 and have had to do some major repairs (timer motor, new resin, o-ring replacement and obvious filter replacement) on both systems and recently showed off the main reverse osmosis membrane in my under the sink reverse osmosis unit. in the pictures he ended up doing everything he could and was no longer able to filter the water as it was barely flowing from the reverse osmosis tap. I called my United Hydro technician and although they come and change the filters I'm back up and running. Well, they only replaced the last carbon filter (I replaced the bottom three filters myself to save a few bucks) and didn't make a reverse osmosis membrane, which surprised me, but in hindsight I'm glad they did. Because it saved me about $100. After the tech left after checking my systems and replacing that one filter it didn't help much and my unit wasn't producing as much water as it should so I called and said he had to come back and replace the reverse osmosis membrane. The support call should have been declined as it just came out but they informed me that a new reverse osmosis membrane filter is $129. I asked him what filter he would install and he told me it was the one I bought from Revain for almost $100 less. Talk about price gouging, but I really appreciate him telling me which filter is right for my unit since it's so old. From what I've read you need to replace these membranes every few years and they can last up to 7 years, but I joke mine didn't last more than 16 years. I used to measure TDS from 9 to 13 with an old filter that was a 24 GPD filter (photos attached) that appears to be discontinued and replaced it with this Filmtec Dupont 50 GPD filter. I'm now getting TDS readings of 20-30 with TDS readings over 200 in the tap after it's gone through the water softener so the new reverse osmosis membrane isn't filtering as much as I was hoping but it works. To be honest my system probably needs a serious deep cleaning as there is an orange film in the areas that I haven't been able to clean as well as I wanted and this probably contributed to this TDS reading and I did recently all filters on my device replaced. and as we all know some filters are not as good as others and you usually get what you pay for. Replacing filters isn't that difficult if you have the patience and necessary elbow grease and filter wrenches to do it properly. My unit had a bushing on the old reverse osmosis membrane that was missing on the new filter that I had to reuse on the new one. I also had to replace an o-ring that was also leaking on one of the bottom filters. I've been considering buying a new water tank because I think the orange deposits on all of the internal filter housings in my system could also be in the water tank and for less than $50 will fix this in the future and hopefully improve the TDS readings could be higher. I hope my review was helpful to you and let you know that it fits the Ultra Micron device and will save you quite a bit of money. One more thing, take a tube of food grade silicone grease and ALWAYS re-grease the o-rings. They significantly reduce the likelihood of housing leakage after filter replacement. There have been a few times over the years that I've skipped this step and regretted not doing it because during that time it had seeped into the bottom of my closet and compromised the chipboard they were made of. Now I've learned my lesson and I always do. Thanks very much!
