Review on πŸ’» SAMSUNG TUV Certified Curved Monitor LS34A650UXNXGO with Intelligent Features: 100Hz, Flicker-Free, High Dynamic Range, and Samsung S65U Technology by Mark Shakey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Noticeable (in a good way) curvature, but not as bright as we'd like

Currently, my everyday computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, four Thunderbolt 3 ports) with an Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 card. I tried to connect this Samsung monitor to my laptop via HDMI and USB-C. Both automatically set the maximum resolution to 3440 x 1440. The HDMI cable had a 50Hz refresh rate, the USB-C 60Hz. I couldn't tell any difference between the two refresh rates. I no longer play intense games and the monitor handled fast movie scenes with no screen stuttering. The quick start guide lists the optimal resolution as 3440 x 1440 @ 60Hz for HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort, USB Type-C and @. 50Hz for HDMI 1.4. The monitor comes with a USB-C cable and an HDMI cable, so you can choose what to use and when. Changing the input is easy, I really like the panel buttons. The middle power button serves as a menu button and is surrounded by four arrow keys. Setting the parameters is intuitive, no more guessing which button corresponds to which menu item. This is good for me because I'm constantly fumbling with image settings. I've never played around with a monitor like this before. I just can't make it bright enough (now 94 😯). I usually turn down the brightness, but on a Samsung monitor, white seems a bit dull to me. Not in the blue light filter. I write a lot in Scrivener and GDocs and I always feel dragging a file from my MacBook screen onto my Samsung monitor. I've tried adjusting all the settings, but the monitor isn't as bright as I'd like. Now I don't really notice if I'm watching a movie or a show, mostly when I'm writing or using a program with a lot of spaces. The monitor has two built-in eye protection settings, Low and High, which can be easily selected using the buttons on the control panel. The base of the monitor is LARGE and takes up a significant portion of my desk. The base is a solid rectangle measuring 12 inches by 9 inches. My desk pad curls over the base and the base crashes into the mouse area. Most of the weight is on the base and the screen itself is fairly light. It's too bright - the monitor on my desk shakes every time I move. This doesn't seem like a huge problem, but it does get on my nerves when the monitor shakes a little every time I change position in my chair. Sometimes I use a mechanical keyboard and when I type fast the monitor shakes. Yes, it's great that I can rotate and adjust the angle and height of the monitor, but I'd like it to be more stable on the base. The monitor's curvature is 1000R, which is about what monitors can currently bend. I have an 1800R curved monitor and the difference is noticeable - I prefer the greater curvature of this Samsung monitor. I find the larger curve more exciting, with less glare and excitement throughout the day. And watching movies is just more fun. For laptop users like me, using USB-C to connect a monitor means my laptop gets charged too. The monitor also has 3 USB 3.0 ports on the back, which comes in handy when I forget my hub or adapter to connect peripherals to my MacBook. Finally, there's no large power adapter, just a thin power cord that slightly sets off the large base.

Pros
  • 34 inches
Cons
  • boring packaging
