Reason for purchase. We've been using cable to watch TV and movies for over 40 years. We tried to limit our cable service to the internet and we had to replace our access to television and movies. Many have already switched, many have never had a cable. Streaming services seem to be more mature, so I took the plunge. I've explored many different streaming devices but settled on Roku. I bought a Roku Premiere+ (for ethernet input) and 2 streaming sticks. Duration of use - 1 month. The setup is very simple. Premier+ hooked it up to my AVR's HDMI and plugged into a separate outlet. At first I used a WiFi connection on the Premier+, but later switched to Ethernet. Streaming sticks are connected to HDMI televisions and separate sockets. The remote controls are small but easy to use. User friendliness. It took some getting used to moving around when changing channels etc, but we're pretty efficient at it now. Adding/removing channels is easy. Each device keeps its own channel apps separately, which can be moved etc. without affecting other Roku devices. Support - never had to contact. Features - The content is amazing. There are websites dedicated to picking Roku channels so you can filter through the many. Many of them are free, some have a subscription that we avoid, some tie their use to the fact that you have a cable provider (isn't that a contradiction in terms?). Our mobile devices can be used to view content or as a remote control. The big benefit is that we're now seeing true 1080P versus 720P from the cable company. problems / problems. We noticed some buffering on PlayStation Vue and NewsOn, but nothing significant. We ran into some issues with one of the Streaming Sticks where the remote control would sometimes not work. We just turn the power off and on again and everything takes care of itself. This may be due to power outages that have recently affected the internet modem. Miscellaneous - We also looked at the different streaming packages available from certain companies. We chose PlayStation Vue because we liked the choice of channels the most. The DVR function is simple and convenient. All content is available via any PC or mobile device, as well as via the guide. The number of HD channels used is now greater than our previous cable provider. One of the best things is the flexibility. If another streaming service comes up I might try that. The hardware is also not a big deal to change when something new comes along. Quality - I give the gear a high rating. I have a 55 inch 1080p TV and two smaller 720p TVs. I highly recommend if you plan on using Roku for 1080P to get something that requires ethernet. I have good broadband and WiFi, but the Premier+ just can't handle 1080p over WiFi. 720P works great with Wi-Fi. I would like the Premier+ to come with 1000 Base-T for Ethernet, not just 10/100 as I believe that would eliminate any buffering. Maybe in the future. The sound quality is in no way inferior to the cable. I have a Premier+ hooked up to my receiver and I'm getting great sound through the speakers. The price is very reasonable in my opinion. My monthly net savings over the cable part is about $58, which would pay for the equipment in less than 4 months. I'm glad we made the change. Between that and switching to Ooma for our landline, we're saving a ton of dollars. A very lucky tourist. EDIT: 3/26/17 - Last night the device died in the middle of watching a Netflix movie. Haven't had any problems in the past month. I'm sending it back for a replacement. I'll leave it at 5 stars for now.
