If you never ride your MTB with pavement

years before anyone suggested a "cross" bike, I used a [nominally] MTB with road slicks as my everyday commuter bike. I still prefer this to the specials available today because they all have 700c rims, and I prefer the tire sizes that come on 26" rims: firstly in cases where you *mow* grass. , mud or sand, you don't dig all the way in and stop like you would with the still under-thin tires of 700c X-bikes Yes, I may not be able to roll on tarmac that easily, but I'm looking for a proper station wagon, not a racing cyclist's idea of a multi-purpose bike. Max internal pressure, they start to spin a bit in corners [YMMV: I'm an LES cyclist aka "Clydesdale".] But they've worked pretty well since I put them on, at a bargain price. Many years ago Conti [Continental] offered an excellent all-round tire: I wish I could remember the exact name of the model, but they probably stopped offering it [or at least didn't bring it to the States] ten years ago. , but he was the best tire, AFAIC; It had a more or less continuous center tread so it layed smooth on the road with significant cavities cut into the rest of the tread with excellent tread pattern/sipes. Almost like knobbly, but backwards so you're smooth overall on tarmac but still get some traction in mud/grass/sand with no noticeable reduction in cornering traction. And the side panels were stiff enough to vent if you hit a patch of dirt long enough to be useful. Unfortunately, it looks like most X-bike tires today are designed by road builders who rely on being able to change tires without leverage, so they have weak sidewalls so you can take them off the rim with your bare hands, when they break. Sorry if I get out of line, I'll either drive home or the rest of the way to work and then fix a tire. Otherwise, I would take a tool kit and pump with me on my travels. Roads shouldn't design tires designed for off-road use, even occasionally! In short, I like these cheap tires, but there are better options if you have the money [or you have a time machine]. and you can go back to about 2000 when I last saw these Contis for sale. ;)]
