With this item you can easily sharpen blunt knives such as paring knives or pocket knives. I haven't tried it on specialty knives like serrated blades or particularly good kitchen knives. This is a well made and simple knife sharpener. No moving parts, no electricity. Worked with both my cheap and fairly expensive knives. Knife fanatics will no doubt find this insufficient; Our previous high-end knife sharpener can certainly make an even thinner and sharper edge (and works with gut hooks I think?). But if you want a sharp knife, not a dull one, this works great - and requires no electricity, safety glasses, sandpaper, etc.
